Koumos Gorge

Koumos Gorge is located in the southern Asterousia Mountains and is one of the most unknown and demanding gorges in Crete. Its route heads toward the area of Agios Ioannis, ending in a landscape with dense pine trees—an intense contrast to the bare and rugged upper section of the gorge. It is a purely technical gorge, as its descent is not done on foot but requires specialized equipment and experience in rope descents. Inside, one 66 encounters around ten rappels that follow the natural course of the streambed. The highest waterfall reaches about 60 meters and is the most impressive and demanding point of the route.

For most of the year the gorge is dry; however, after heavy rainfall, water forms waterfalls and torrents, radically transforming the landscape and bringing life to the steep rock faces. Its isolation and difficult access have preserved the gorge in an unspoiled state, making it particularly attractive to experienced canyoners seeking authentic experiences.
