Running over 3 years, the project focuses on promoting\u00a0<\/span>a more sustainable and climate-neutral Europe\u00a0<\/span>by working through research and education, with the goal to develop\u00a0<\/span>innovative solutions to environmental and climate change challenges in selected UNESCO sites<\/span>, 5 per year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The project contributes to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/span><\/span>, notably SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on land).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This year, following a comprehensive selection process, UNESCO and the aCF selected the first set of 5 sites:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Biosphere Reserve and Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region in Albania\/North Macedonia<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0provides refuge for numerous freshwater species of flora and fauna. Innovative ways of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>mapping water-related ecosystems\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>will be promoted through the \u201cSt. Naum springs \u2013 Biological and Ecosystem services Inventory (SN-BESI)\u201d project.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Asterousia Mountain Range Biosphere Reserve in Greece<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0hosts 50% of all animal and plant species recorded in Crete.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Marine litter data<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0through community-based research will be generated by the project \u201cMonitoring marine litter and generating fit-for-purpose data through a participatory science approach in Asterousia Biosphere Reserve\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tuscan Islands Biosphere Reserve in Italy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0encompasses a wide range of geological, geomorphological and biological diversity. The\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>sustainable use of water and insular ecosystems<\/span><\/span><\/span>, notably through remote sensing techniques, will be explored in the project \u201cPianosa Island: hydrological processes and water resources sustainability in the climate-changing Mediterranean\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kozjansko and Obsotelje Biosphere Reserve in Slovenia<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is one of the country\u2019s most important nature conservation areas regarding biotic diversity. The<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0biodiversity of dry grasslands\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>will be monitored through the project \u201cDry meadows and Kozjansko and Obsotelje biosphere reserve\u201d, and a genetic seed bank will be created.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere Reserve in the United Kingdom<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0comprises 3 distinct but interrelated environments – rural, coastal & marine and urban.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0as a key tool for managing groundwater in urban areas will be promoted in the project \u201cSustainable management of urban aquifers.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Representatives from all 5 sites, UNESCO and abrdn met and discussed how the projects would be developed on the ground and how the results of the projects could be scaled up globally.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

UNESCO will work with the selected sites to ensure the results fit within the priority areas of its scientific programmes \u2013 MAB, IHP and IOC.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The projects are expected to promote research related to UNESCO\u2019s science intergovernmental programmes: biodiversity, nature-based solutions, ecosystem services, water, the ocean, and the climate; but also, Education for Sustainable Development, water education and Ocean Literacy, and climate change education working with schools within the sites; and, finally, innovative \u2018green\u2019 and \u2018blue\u2019 solutions for sustainable development, climate change mitigation and adaptation involving key stakeholders such as local businesses, NGOs and youth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ana Luiza M. Thompson-Flores, Officer-in-Charge of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, said: \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>I am delighted to witness today the start of this innovative public-private partnership implemented in UNESCO\u2019s designated sites. I am sure that the fantastic projects relating to biodiversity, water and the ocean we have heard about today will have a great impact on the sustainability of these sites, which we see as pilots for the implementation of the SDGs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
