Gerakia Gorgre

Gerakia is a technical gorge of the Asterousia Mountains, in the area of Agios Ioannis, with a distinctly southern orientation. It belongs to an impressive “chain” of parallel technical gorges that cut through the southern slopes of the range, together with the gorges of Flomias, Salamiano, Koumos, Goulas, and Elygias.

Together, they form a unique complex of wild and little-known 64 routes. The Gerakia Gorge runs through a pine forest, a feature that clearly sets it apart from other gorges of the Asterousia Mountains, where bare and rocky landscapes dominate. The presence of pine trees creates a more enclosed and shaded environment, filled with intense resin scents and a strong sense of isolation, especially as one moves deeper into the ravine. It is a purely technical gorge and is intended for experienced canyoners, as its descent requires the use of ropes and knowledge of rappelling techniques. Like most gorges in the area, it is usually dry; however, after periods of heavy rainfall, water flow and small waterfalls may appear, revealing the dynamic nature of the terrain. Today, the gorge remains largely unknown to the general public, but it is a distinctive destination for those seeking the wildest and most technical side of southern Crete.
