Elygia Beach

Elygia Beach Elygia Beach is the largest beach of the coastal settlement of Agios Ioannis Kapetanianon, which lies under the shadow of the imposing Mount Kofinas, the highest peak of the Asterousia Mountains. Access is from Kapetaniana via a dirt road that follows the edge of the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Libyan Sea and the wild, rugged landscape. The beach stretches east of the small peninsula of Ponta and, despite its short distance from the settlement, remains quiet and relatively secluded.

It has fine gravel and clear, deep waters, while its great length allows visitors to enjoy swimming without crowding. The gorge of the same name ends at Elygia, adding to the scenery a sense of untamed natural continuity from mountain to sea. From the parking area, a stepped path leads down to the shore. Around the beach there are traces of earlier human activity. Notable among them is Kakopigado, a well with steps and permanent fresh water, as well as the cave known as Spilios tis Vasilopoulas, also called Gourounospilios, which is linked to local traditions.

Wells, dry-stone walls, and caves testify to the presence of hermits, pilgrims to Koudoumas Monastery, and people who once exploited the area’s natural salt pans. In local folk memory, Elygia is associated with a particular legend of an apparition of the Virgin Mary, which in the past led people to avoid spending the night on the beach. Today, far from intensive intervention, Elygia preserves its authentic character and offers moments of absolute tranquility and close contact with the wild landscape of the Asterousia Mountains.
