Gorge of Koudoumas (Kataraktis Gorge)

Koudoumas Gorge, also known as the Gorge of Kofinas or Kataraktis Gorge, is one of the wildest and most impressive gorges of southern Crete. It begins at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, at a location called Sopata, near the base of the highest peak of the Asterousia Mountains, Mount Kofinas, and ends at the beach of Koudoumas Monastery on the shores of the Libyan Sea. The route links the austere mountain landscape with the sea, offering a rare experience of transition from mountain to open waters.

The initial section of the gorge is, on the one hand of exceptional natural beauty, but on the other, it is a purely technical section, with narrow passages and vertical drops that require specialized canyoning equipment. In total, the gorge features 18 descents (rappels), the longest reaching 38 meters. Its first descent was completed in 2004, while full anchoring and safety equipment were installed in 2017 by a team of experienced canyoners. The gorge can also be descended without technical equipment by bypassing the difficult waterfall section from the side. However, even this option demands great caution and very good physical condition. The steep slopes put heavy strain on the knees, and the terrain is loose and unstable. The remoteness of the area heightens the sense of adventure but also increases the need for thorough preparation. Vegetation changes gradually along the route.

At higher elevations, cypress trees and kermes oaks dominate, while lower down pine trees appear, creating strong contrasts within the gorge. The landscape remains authentic and pristine, with steep slopes and rugged geomorphology. Koudoumas Gorge is suited to experienced mountaineers and adventurers seeking intense thrills and a direct confrontation with the untamed nature of the Asterousia Mountains.
